The alarming rise in suicides continues to haunt Sikkim as yet another tragic case has been reported from Namchi.
A 13-year-old girl was found hanging, marking the 20th suicide case in the state within just 14 days.
The minor girl was found hanging from the ceiling beam of her room on Saturday at around 3:00 PM.
According to preliminary investigations, the deceased was a student of Mamring Junior High School and the only child of her parents.
She had reportedly expressed a desire to transfer to a different school in Namthang, but due to logistical challenges, her parents were unable to facilitate the move.
On the day of the incident, the girl was alone at home as it was a school holiday.
Her father, a casual labourer, and her mother, an employee at a private company, were at work, while her grandfather had gone to the fields. Her mother returned home in the afternoon and found her daughter hanging from the ceiling beam of her room.
The case is under investigation, with officials trying to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident.
The disturbing frequency of such incidents has left residents shocked and raised urgent concerns about the mental health crisis gripping the region.
However, the increasing number of suicides reported almost daily has triggered widespread concern, with many calling for immediate intervention from mental health professionals, government agencies, and community leaders.
Recently, alarmed by the sudden spike in suicide cases in the state, Sikkim Health and Family Welfare Minister G T Dhungel has urged anyone experiencing stress or anxiety to seek help and reach out to trained counsellors.
The Minister shared the toll-free 24×7 mental health support numbers 14416 and 1-800-891-4416 of MANAS for assistance.
