Sikkim: Politics has heated up in the Himalayan state, after SKM supporters blocked the Sikkim Sudhar Yatra by Ganesh Rai led SRC.

Reported by Prakash Adhikari

Situation turned tense at Melli in South Sikkim after Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) supporters blocked dissident SDF (Sikkim Democratic Front) leader Ganesh Rai’s Sikkim Sudhar Yatra (Sikkim Reform Rally) on Monday morning.

Speaking to Northeast Live, SKM supporters alleged that Ganesh Rai, who resigned from the SDF, had never worked for development and welfare of the people when he was in power. The SKM workers even alleged that Rai had cheated people in the name of allocation of schemes and other government benefits.

On the other hand, Sikkim Reform Call spokesperson Albert Gurung said that the Sikkim Sudhar Yatra is being conducted for a ‘Better Sikkim.’ Gurung also maintained that Reformative Politics is the main motto of the SRC, the organisation floated by Rai after leaving SDF. Gurung also clearly stated that the SRC does not believe in acrimonious politics.

Gurung also said that since the SKM is in power, it can probe every allegation levelled against Ganesh Rai and reveal the truth. “If need be the Government can also ask the CBI to prove everything,” Gurung said. The SRC leader believes that people of the Himalayan state are very aware and politically conscious and said that the SKM can stop them physically but not their ideas.

It may be mentioned that the SDF, suffered a big setback when 42 of their party cadres resigned in January. Among those who stepped down from the party included former deputy speaker Sonam G. Lepcha, former minister Dawcho Lepcha, SDF spokesperson Prashant Babu Chettri and south district vice president Ganesh Rai.

Subsequent to this, Ganesh Rai had declared that “they will be floating a political party in 2022 with an eye on 2024 elections” but so far there has been no annoucement.
