The Citizen Action Party (CAP) has re-entered the race for the Namchi Singhithang and Soreng Chakung assembly seats in the upcoming Sikkim bypolls and named the same candidates who had contested the Assembly elections held in April this year but lost.
On the last day of nomination filing, the party announced its candidates and submitted their nominations for the upcoming by-polls on November 13.
The party fielded Mahesh Rai for the Namchi Singithang seat, where he will face off with SKM’s Satish Chandra Rai and SDF’s Daniel Rai.
The party named Pobin Hang Subba for the Soreng Chakung constituency, where he will fight against SKM candidate Aditya Golay, son of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and SDF’s Prem Bahadur Bhandari.
Both Subba and Rai had contested in the assembly elections from the same seats respectively but did not win.
Mahesh Rai lost to SKM’s Krishna Kumari Rai, wife of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, in Namchi Singithang, while Pobin Hang Subba was defeated by CM Tamang himself in Soreng Chakung.
Mahesh Rai and Pobin Hang Subba both are spokespersons of CAP.
The Soreng-Chakung seat fall vacant after CM Prem Singh Tamang resigned as MLA to focus on the Rhenock constituency, while the Namchi-Shinghithang seat fall vacant after Krishna Kumari Rai resigned as MLA from the seat stating that she does not require a position to serve the people of the state.
The by-elections for both seats will take place on November 13, 2024, with the counting of votes scheduled for November 23.
