In a significant development for Sikkim politics, Bandhana Bhattarai (Sharma), spokesperson of the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), has resigned from all party positions and her primary membership today.
Her resignation comes just days after former SDF Forest Minister Tshering Wangdi Lepcha stepped down from the party after being with the party for over 30 years.
In her resignation, Bhattarai cited her desire to focus on personal growth, career advancement, and social activities as her reasons for leaving the party.
Bhattarai expressed her gratitude to SDF Party President and former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling for the trust and opportunities provided to her early in her political career.
She also congratulated the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) and its president, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, for their significant victory in the April 19, 2024 assembly election, which secured SKM’s second consecutive term in government.
She started his political career with SDF in 2019.
The back-to-back resignation of SDF members adds to the ongoing challenges facing the party, which currently has no MLAs and is struggling to regain its footing in the political landscape of Sikkim.
