The expedition team also conducted a preliminary assessment of Khangchung Tsho Lake, situated at 18,000 feet

An expedition team focused on studying Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) in Sikkim’s Mangan district successfully reached Gurudongmar Lake yesterday.

Upon their arrival, a traditional prayer ceremony was conducted by monks from the Lachen Monastery, members of the Lachen Dzumsa, and the expedition team itself. The ceremony, performed in accordance with local customs, was held to invoke the blessings of Guru Rinpoche.

The expedition team also conducted a preliminary assessment of Khangchung Tsho Lake, situated at 18,000 feet, which is the largest lake in Sikkim, measuring over 3 kilometers in length.

Today, the team plans to conduct a more detailed study of Khangchung Tsho and Shako Chho lakes.
The 32-member team that left from Zero Point, Gangtok on 31st August is on a mission to conduct a detailed susceptibility assessment of glacial lakes – Tenchungkha, Khangchung Chho, Lachen-Khangtse, Lachung-Khangtse, La Tsho and Shako Chho.

This mission is not covering the three high-risk lakes, namely Guru-dongmar A, B, and C, as these lakes are considered to be sacred with sentimental value for the locals.

The study mission comes in the backdrop of the massive destruction and devastation caused by the glacial lake outburst in the South Lhonak lake in North Sikkim last year.
