The administration has sounded alert and stepped up preventive measures to fight erosion in the Greenpark area

Heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours has severely affected normal life, especially in South Sikkim. Water levels of two major rivers- Rangeet and Rambang have reportedly risen owing to the incessant downpour, roads have been washed away affecting connectivity in several parts of the Himalayan state.

Gushing waters of the Rangeet river washed away a portion of the Majigaon road in Jorethang snapping off road connectivity.

As per inputs at least 50 houses in the Greenpark area of Majigaon are facing threat of being eroded away by the heavy flow of water.

The administration has sounded alert and stepped up preventive measures to fight erosion. Residents of the area have been shifted to safety.

Tarpaulin sheets were deployed to prevent further erosion of properties by the raging rivers. Residents in the Green Park area have been advised to avoid going near the riversides for their safety.

It is feared that the water levels might rise further worsening the impending flood situation in the hill state as the IMD has predicted more rainfall for the state in the next 48 hours.
