Man convicted for killing Sikkim doctor Sanjay Upreti sentenced to life imprisonment after 3 years

The Special District and Sessions Court in Gangtok, Sikkim has sentenced Thinlay Dorjee Bhutia to life imprisonment for allegedly killing renowned cardiologist of Sikkim, Dr. Sanjay Upreti in 2021.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Jyoti Khadka of the Special District and Sessions Court in Gangtok during an open court session today.

Accused Thinlay Dorjee Bhutia was convicted by the District session Court, Gangtok yesterday for killing Dr. Sanjay Upreti under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

On December 14, 2021, Bhutia attacked a lady named Kalawati Chetri with a knife at the Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial (STNM) Hospital as she did not answer his phone calls and refused to go with him. Following this, Dr. Sanjay Upreti tried to intervene, when he was attacked by Bhutia.

On December 24, 2021, Dr. Sanjay Upreti succumbed to his injuries at the Neotia Superspeciality Hospital in Siliguri.
