“These soldiers, unrelated to us by blood, gave their lives so that we can live in peace," Rajnath Singh added.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually inaugurated Prerna Sthal in Burdang, Sikkim on Friday, to honor the 22 soldiers who tragically lost their lives during a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood at South Lhonak Lake in October last year. Due to bad weather in Gangtok, the ceremony was conducted from the Headquarters of the Trishakti Corps in Sukna, West Bengal.
In his speech, Rajnath Singh paid deep tribute to the fallen soldiers, highlighting their bravery and dedication. He stated that the memorial ensures their sacrifices will never be forgotten and will continue to inspire future generations. “This memorial is a symbol of courage and will remind everyone of the soldiers’ unwavering commitment to the nation,” he said.
Rajnath Singh also emphasized the role such memorials play in awakening a sense of national pride, noting that while every Indian feels this pride, it sometimes fades in the busyness of daily life. He compared Prerna Sthal to the National War Memorial in New Delhi, where the names of 26,000 fallen heroes are inscribed, calling both landmarks reminders of the debt the nation owes to its soldiers.
“We can never repay this debt. These soldiers, unrelated to us by blood, gave their lives so that we can live in peace,” the Rajnath Singh added, saluting their selfless service.
The event was organized by the Trishakti Corps, with key dignitaries the Governor of Sikkim, Om Prakash Mathur, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and Vice Chief of the Army Staff Lt. Gen. NS Raja Subramani in attendance. Families of the fallen soldiers were honoured during the ceremony.
Prerna Sthal, built jointly by the Indian Army and the Governor of Sikkim, stands as a powerful symbol of bravery and sacrifice. The Indian Army has also restored the surrounding area, which was devastated by the floods, transforming it into a peaceful and scenic memorial site. The memorial will serve as a lasting reminder of the soldiers’ courage and inspire future generations.
