Ganesh Rai also stated that the Finance Bill 2023 does not pave the way for the merger of Sikkim and Darjeeling
The Citizen Action Party has opposed the Finance Act 2023, which expanded the Sikkimese term as per the amendments made to the bill.
Citizen Action Party’s Chief Coordinator Ganesh Kumar Rai accused Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and SDF leader Pawan Chamling of being the root causes of the expansion of the definition of Sikkim.
Addressing a press conference, Rai said that Nar Bahadur Bhandari’s government was ousted due to the 1994 income tax case and that when the Association of Old Settlers of Sikkim was exempted, it was only a political bread-baking job from Sikkim, and now all the rights of Sikkim have ended.
Rai also termed the statement made by Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indrahang Subba regarding the passage of the Finance Bill as irresponsible.
Rai also stated that the Finance Bill 2023 does not pave the way for the merger of Sikkim and Darjeeling.
Furthermore, Rai said clause 5 of the Act, which says “Any other individual, who is not domiciled in Sikkim on or before the 26th day of April 1975, but it is established beyond doubt that such individual’s father or husband, paternal grandfather, or brother from the same father was domiciled in Sikkim on or before the 26th day of April 1975,” was not proposed by order of the Supreme Court.
He added that the Lok Sabha is one step ahead of the Supreme Court and could look into this matter.
The Joint Action Council will hold a rally on April 8, and Rai has shown support for the rally.
