Christmas celebrations have always been special in the Northeast. Churches have been decorated and lighted for the festive occasion. From Shillong to Aizawl, the spirit of Chirstmas has gripped all towns and cities of the region.

As the Yuletide festivities kicked in across the globe, people prayed for peace and amity and for the strengthening of brotherhood among various communities.

Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in wishing people on the eve of Christmas.

“Merry Christmas to all fellow citizens and especially to our Christian brothers and sisters in India and abroad. This is a day to renew our commitment to values of compassion, love, fraternity. May Jesus Christ bless us all with happiness and joy’, President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted.

“Merry Christmas!
We remember, with immense joy, the noble thoughts of Jesus Christ. He epitomised spirit of service and compassion, devoting his life towards alleviating human suffering.
His teachings inspire millions across the world”, tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The spirit of celebrations pervaded the air with sounds of bells and carols at Don Bosco catholic church in Guwahati at the heart of the capital city in Panabazar area.

Celebrations began in Meghalaya as the clock struck 12 with people coming out of the various churches and exchanging greetings. The special mass held on Monday night witnessed good participation as faithfuls prayed and welcomed the birth of Jesus Christ.
