Nagaland’s Sao Chang College without Principal for 2 years: Students threaten intensifying agitation

First Published: 17th October, 2023 13:54 IST

On Monday, the students took to the streets against the alleged delay by the authorities in addressing their grievances

Unhappy over non-fulfilment of demands, students of the Sao Chang College in Nagaland’s Tuensang district have warned of intensifying their agitation effective today if their charter of demands are not met at the earliest.
Though Sao Chang College can boast of being one of the oldest colleges in Nagaland, it is indeed surprising that it is running without a Principal for over a couple of years. On Monday, students dressed in black marched from Tower Clock till Deputy Commissioner office raising slogans in support of their demands.
On September 9, the Sao Chang College Students’ Union (SCCSU) submitted a charter of demands that included the appointment of a principal, stating that the college has been functioning without a principal for a couple of years, creating untold hardships in the functioning of the college.
The charter of demands also includes need for new college buses. The college student’s union said that the buses are so outdated that several incidents of brake-fail have traumatised the students. The Sao Chang College Students Union even claimed that some students missed the recently held internal exams due to the unavailability of college buses.
The Union alleged that 70% of the 668 students miss their classes every day due to the outdated buses which makes travelling a herculean task.
The students are also demanding upgradation of the science laboratory.
As there is only one government college in whole of Tuensang, Noklak and Shamator districts, they said the issues of four outdated buses and the horrible road condition of 7-km stretch could not be ignored or delayed any further.
