Nagaland gets its first medical college, Union Health Minister Mandaviya inaugurates NIMSR

A long cherished dream of the people of Nagaland to have a medical college turned into a reality today. The state got it’s first medical college today after Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR) in Kohima.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang, Nagaland Health and Family Welfare minister P Paiwang Konyak were also present on the occasion.
On the occasion, Mandaviya in his address to the state said, “NIMSR is not just a medical college, it is also a research institute. It will not only fulfil the purpose of imparting medical education but will also address the health issues of the Naga people.”

Mandaviya also affirmed about Centre’s commitment for improving medical education in the state. He said that in a span of 9 years, the MBBS seats in Nagaland has increased to 1.60 lakh from 64,000. He maintained that PG have also doubled in the last 9 years.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio speaking on the historic moment said, “today is a historic day for the people of Nagaland as we inaugurated the first medical college in the state”. Besides, Rio also lauded the efforts of the centre in bringing up the project swiftly.
In a post on X, Rio said, “Honoured to have Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya @mansukhmandviya, Union Minister @MoHFW_INDIA & Chemical & Fertilizers. Today is a historic day for the people of Nagaland as we formally inaugurate our first medical college – Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (NIMSR).”
“Establishment of the medical college is a big step in achieving the committed fulfillment of the “Vision 2030″ goal of providing accessible, available & affordable healthcare. I thank all those who worked hard to make this college a reality & also to all the stakeholders,” Rio added.
NIMSR Kohima is affiliated to Nagaland University. It received the Letter of Permission for admission of 100 MBBS seats from academic year 2023-2024 from the National Medical Commission (NMC), in April 2023 paving way to start the first Medical College in the state after 60 years of statehood, realizing the long-cherished dream of the people of Nagaland.
85 MBBS students from state of Nagaland and 6 students from all India seats got admitted in NIMSR and have joined MBBS classes after induction program on September 1 this year.
