Nagaland on Thursday became the first state in North Eastern region to start Aadhaar Linked Birth Registration (ALBR).

The initiative was launched today in the State’s capital Kohima to facilitate birth registration–based Aadhaar enrolment for children up to five years of age, officials said.

Following the initiative, Director of UIDAI, Col. Abhishek Koushik, lauded the Nagaland government for becoming the first northeastern State to implement ALBR.

The UIDAI’s regional office in Guwahati has been working closely with the office of Commissioner Nagaland, which is also the nodal department for Aadhaar-related activities in the State bordering Myanmar.

Earlier, the Centre has allowed the Office of Registrar General of India (RGI) to perform Aadhaar authentication during registration of births and deaths in the country.

However, Aadhaar is not mandatory for such registration.

A notification published on June 27, 2023 said the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEiTY) has allowed the RGI office to use the Aadhaar database for authenticating the identity details provided during registration of births and deaths.
