Days after the BJP announced its unconditional support to the NDPP candidate in the lone Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland, the National People’s Party (NPP) has also decided to back the NDPP.

Dr Chumben Murry is the NDPP candidate as well as the common candidate of the NDA in the seat.

Meghalaya CM and NPP chief Conrad Sangma was himself in Dimapur to meet his Nagaland counterpart as well as NDPP chief Neiphiu Rio to formally announce his party’s support to the NDPP candidate.

Conrad Sangma was accompanied by senior NPP leader and Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma and the 5 NPP MLAs in Nagaland.

Both the leaders had detailed discussions on the poll preparedness for the parliamentary election.

Conrad Sangma confirmed about his party’s support to the NDPP candidate in a post on X.

Sangma posted, “Called on Hon’ble Chief Minister Nagaland @Neiphiu_Rio ji along with party leaders and party MLAs from Nagaland to extend support to Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) for the ensuing Lok Sabha election.

As coalition partner of the NDA, the National People’s Party has resolved to extend full support to Lok Sabha candidate from the State of Nagaland Dr. Chumben Murry, sponsored by the NDPP.”

Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio also appreciated the NPP’s decision to extend support to the NDPP candidate in the Lok Sabha election.

CM Rio in a post on X mentioned, “Always a pleasure to meet Shri Conrad Sangma @SangmaConrad, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya. He called on me along with Shri Thomas A Sangma, Hon’ble Speaker of Meghalaya. I appreciate @NPPIndia_, under his leadership, for extending support to our PDA consensus candidate.”

Sharing details as to what transpired in the meeting with Nagaland CM Rio, Conrad Sangma said, “In the true spirit of NDA, as you are aware the NDA partners have expressed similar support to the different political parties of the NDA, who has sponsored candidates in different parts of the Northeast, the NDA partners are supporting each other in those states also.

For example in Meghalaya the NDA partners are supporting the candidature of the NPP, in Arunachal the NDA parners are supporting the candidature of the BJP, and also in Outer Manipur the NPF has met me today and they have urged us to support and officially we have discussed this with the Manipur unit also of the NPP and our MLAs have also expressed that they will support the candidature of the NPF.

So this is the spirit in which the entire NDA is working and it is in that spirit that we met the honourable CM of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio and we have handed over the resolution to him and we have expressed our full support for the candidature sponsored by the NDPP.”

Other issues were also discussed in the meeting between both the Chief Ministers.

Regarding this, Conrad Sangma said, “Apart from that we have discussed other issues related to the overall coalition and working of the coalition and those are of course matters which are more internal and therefore I will not discuss those things in details. But certain concerns have been expressed and those have been shared with the CM of Nagaland.”

The NPP has 5 MLAs in the 60-member Nagaland Legislative Assembly while the NDPP has 25 MLAs.
The Congress has fielded S. Supongmeren Jamir from the Nagaland Lok Sabha seat.
