An emergency meeting was convened by Kohima District authorities to address the landslide on NH-29 near Dzüdza Bridge, disrupting traffic and supplies
Incessant rainfall has triggered landslides, blocking National Highway 29, the main route linking Kohima, Nagaland’s capital, to Dimapur. The landslide occurred near Dzudza village in Kohima district on Monday, has severely disrupting transportation and the flow of essential supplies to the region, cutting off Kohima from Dimapur, the state’s commercial hub.
Additionally, heavy downpours have caused significant waterlogging in several areas of Dimapur, further affecting traffic movement.
An emergency meeting of the Kohima District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) was held yesterday that decided the immediate measures to be taken to alleviate the situation and ensure the safety of commuters and the continuation of vital supply of essential commodities.
During the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Kumar Ramnikant informed that the SDO Civil Sechü-Zubza, along with village authorities and contractor personnel, had inspected the upper reaches of the landslide-affected area. The findings from this inspection were submitted as a preliminary report to guide further actions.
A special committee, chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) and CEO DDMA Kohima, Rhosietho Nguori NCS, was formed to visit the site and continuously monitor the situation. This committee will be responsible for drafting a comprehensive plan to prevent future landslides in the area and submitting recommendations to higher authorities for prompt action.
Taking to social media platform X, DIPR,Nagaland said, “On August 17, 2024, DDMA officials led by Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Kumar Ramnikant IAS, along with officials from NHIDCL and M/S Brand Eagles, inspected the landslide at Chainage KM 163+980 to KM 164+030(RHS) in Dzüdza village , Sechü Zubza( NH-29 between Kohima and Dimapur).”
The urgent need to regulate traffic, particularly for trucks carrying essential commodities, was highlighted during the meeting. To this end, teams have been proposed to visit stranded trucks and offer basic assistance to truckers in need.
Additionally, all concerned agencies were instructed to maintain alternate routes for commuters properly, ensuring smoother travel in light of the main road’s disruption.
