Illegal ‘tax’: PMLA court summons NSCN-IM leader Rayilung Nsarangbe & others

In a big development, A special PMLA court in Nagaland has issued notices to a close aide of top NSCN-IM leader T Muivah and others to appear before it after the Enforcement Directorate filed charge sheet against them. Multiple media reports stated that Nsarangbe and his wife to face trial after taking cognisance of the chargesheet.

The Court stated that probe establishes the fact that district representatives of NSCN-IM of four districts of Manipur – Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul and Chandel – were extorting money from construction firms businessmen etc. and paying to Rayilung as illegal tax imposed by the outfit.

A major part of the extortion amount was being utilised as per the direction of the “collective leadership” and a part of it was being deposited in the bank accounts maintained in the name of Rayilung and his wife Ruth Chawang,” the ED said. To conceal the proceeds of crime, the accused had invested the proceeds of crime in several mutual funds and insurance policies in the name of Ruth Chawang @ Ruth Zeliang, as per reports

Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed a chargesheet against Rayilung Nsarangbe, a self-styled NSCN-IM leader and his wife accusing them of illegally collecting ‘tax.’ Media reports quoting the ED had said that Nsarangbe, who happens to be the Treasurer of the NSCN-IM, runs a well organized money laundering racket, transfers ‘proceeds of crime’ to the top NSCN-IM leadership.
Earlier, the ED had attached proceeds of crime amounting to Rs 6.9 crore.
