Run-up to Mizoram assembly polls: Cong forges alliance with like-minded parties

First Published: 18th August, 2023 14:22 IST

Congress has formed the alliance Mizoram Secular Alliance (MSA) with Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) and the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP)

Hectic politicking is taking place in poll-bound Mizoram that goes to polls later this year. In latest development, the Congress has forged an alliance with like-minded parties like the Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC) and the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) which is a breakaway faction of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), the principal opposition party in the state.

The alliance has been named Mizoram Secular Alliance (MSA). Mizoram Congress leader Lallianchhunga confirmed the development and expects that all other parties except the BJP and NDA ally Mizo National Front (MNF) will be joining the Mizoram Secular Alliance (MSA).

In fact, the Mizoram Secular Alliance (MSA) leaders are hopeful that NGOs too will be joining them.
Congress had ruled Mizoram for 34 years and is trying to pull all stops to make a come back to power.
The ruling MNF (Mizo National Front) occupies 27 seats out of the total 40 assembly seats in the state.
In terms of the Opposition camp, the ZPM has 6 seats, Congress 5 seats, BJP 1 seat and Independent 1.

Congress party seems to be re-strategizing and reworking its plans in northeast.

Worth mentioning that the Congress too has stepped up its efforts in Tripura to pave way for an ‘Unified Opposition’ by aligning with the Left Front and TIPRA Motha ahead of the September 5 by-polls for the Dhanpur and Boxanagar seats.

The Mizoram Assembly election and the Tripura by-polls can be seen as a litmus test for every political party in the region ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year.
Mizoram Assembly elections for the 40-member Assembly would be held before December this year.
