Mizoram’s Champhai selected for Swadesh Darshan 2

Under the scheme, over 30 cities from across 15 states are being shortlisted to be developed as sustainable and responsible destinations

In a move that would boost tourism in Mizoram’s Champhai district, the district has been selected to be develop as a sustainable and responsible destination under Swadesh Darshan 2.

Champhai is known for its rich culture and heritage, adventure, and ecotourism. Some of the important destinations in Champhai include Lianchhiari Lunglen Tlang, Mizo Hlakungpui Mual, Kawtchhuah Ropui, Thasiama SeNo neihna, Kungawrhi Puk, and Lamsial Puk.

The Swadesh Darshan Scheme (SDS) was launched by the center in 2014-15 for the integrated development of theme-based tourist circuits in the country with the objective of developing tourism infrastructure.

A total of 76 projects have been sanctioned in various states and the UT administration under this scheme.

In January this year, the Ministry of Tourism revamped its Swadesh Darshan scheme as Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0) for the development of sustainable and responsible tourist destinations.
The objective of the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme is to increase private sector investment in tourism and hospitality.

This scheme will help increase public-private partnerships (PPP) in the field of tourism and the operation and maintenance of the assets created under the scheme.

Under the scheme, over 30 cities from across 15 states are being shortlisted to be developed as sustainable and responsible destinations.

In Northeast, Assam’s Kokrajhar district, a popular wildlife tourist circuit with national parks like Manas National Park, Raimona National Park, and religious places like Mahamaya Dham and Mahamaya Snan Ghat will be taken up for overall development and upgradation.

Jorhat, another popular wildlife tourist destination in the state, will showcase Kaziranga National Park, Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, Majuli, and Shivsagar known for its rich culture and heritage.
