Mizoram: Myanmar Army Aircraft, with 14 crew members on board, skids off the runway at Lengpui airport near Aizawl

The Lengpui Airport has a table top runway of 2500 meters in length and is located at an elevation of 1228 feet from the sea level.

A Myanmar Army Aircraft with 14 crew members on board skidded off the runway at the Lengpui airport near Aizawl.

Four of the 14 crew members are said to be critical. 8 crew members who suffered minor injuries have been admitted to the Lengpui Public Health Centre.

The aircraft had come to Lengpui to evacuate the 256 Myanmar Army personnel who had fled Myanmar and were seeking asylum at Parva III village in Mizoram last week. This was the first sortie of the day to evacuate another 92 Myanmar Army officials. Planes from Myanmar have been coming in to evacuate Myanmar Army personnel who have sought shelter in Mizoram because of the ongoing violence in Myanmar.

The aircraft that crashed was a Shaanxi Y8 or Yunsuji 8 medium range transport aircraft manufactured by the Shaanxi Aircraft Corporation of China.

The Lengpui Airport has a table top runway of 2500 meters in length and is located at an elevation of 1228 feet from the sea level.

Amar Nath, In charge of the Lengpui Airport speaking to Northeast Live said, “The aircraft while landing it landed safely, but it could not go to the runway end, instead it went out of the runway. There is no casualty, only 8 are injured. The aircraft has been damaged and it will take time to be removed.”

He further stated, “It has not crash landed, but it landed safely. It skidded off while taxing, I think it was in speed and that is why the pilot could not control. 14 were on board, 8 of them suffered minor injuries and they have been taken to the hospital. It was coming from Myanmar.”
