Mizoram: Drugs worth Rs 117.84 cr seized in Champhai district alone in less than 10 days

Border town Zokhawthar in Champhai district has emerged as the hotspot for the drug cartels
Champhai district in Mizoram seems to have turned into a favourite transit route for the international drugs smuggling cartels. All the seizures this month has been made in Zokhawthar, a border town in the Champhai district.
Drugs worth Rs 117.84 crore have been seized by the Assam Rifles in less than 10 days in the district.
In the latest seizure, 1 lakh Methamphetamine tablets (weighing 10 Kgs) worth Rs 30 crore has been seized in Champhai by Assam Rifles.
One Myanmar national who was transporting the consignment was apprehended by the Assam Rifles and handed over to the police later.
On September 12, two lakh Methamphetamine tablets, with an estimated value of Rs 60 crore, and 3.978kg of heroin, valued at Rs 27.84 crore was seized. The consignment was recovered from along the Zokhawthar to Melbuk Road.
The other seizures made this month include-
September 14- In a joint operation of the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police, 20 soap cases of Heroin worth Rs 1.65 crores was seized from Zokhawthar. One person was arrested in connection with the case.
September 4- Assam Rifles recovered 23.9gm of illegal Heroin worth Rs 16.7 lakhs from Zote, Champhai District. The seized Heroin was handed over to the Excise & Narcotics Department team on spot, for further legal proceedings.
One of the 11 districts of Mizoram, Champhai is located on the India-Myanmar border. While the International Border remains porous, it has turned to be a safe passage for the drug cartels. However, the Assam Rifles bravehearts have foiled many such attempts and has intensified the efforts further to wipe out the menace of drugs.
