Cyclone Mocha: MET dept forecasts heavy rain, strong winds over the weekend in Mizoram

The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal is fast turning into Cyclone Mocha today and by tomorrow afternoon it is forecasted to turn into a very severe storm. The cyclone is expected to make landfall on May 14 morning at Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh and Kukpyu in Myanmar. The wind speeds can reach 130 kmph, over the southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal.
The MET department has predicted its impact in neighbouring Mizoram.
Issuing a warning today, district administrations have advised people to stay indoors particularly on Saturday and Sunday because the state is likely to be hit by heavy rainfall and strong wind with a speed of 50-60 km per hour that could go up to 70 km per hour over the weekend.
Deputy Commissioners of Aizawl, Lunglei and Champhai districts of Mizoram on Thursday issued a cyclone warning to the people and issued several instructions.
The deputy commissioners said that a circular issued by the India Meteorological Department, Ministry of Earth Sciences on Thursday warned of possible cyclonic storm ‘Mocha’ hitting Mizoram on Saturday and Sunday. The general public has been asked to stay indoors and not panic.
They asked all the village level disaster committees to make preparations in case of the cyclone Mocha hitting their villages.
According to the bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department, Ministry of Earth Sciences, the formation of deep depression in the south east of the Bay of Bengal has transformed into a strong cyclonic storm in the surrounding areas.
