A Special Court (Prevention of Corruption Act) in Aizawl convicted a man from Tripura in a graft case on Monday.

The accused, Subhrendu Deb Roy, is a resident of Dharamnagar, Tripura.

Special judge HTC Lalrinchhana, while pronouncing the judgment, said, “Subhrendu Deb Roy is convicted under section 409/471 read with 120-B IPC and under section 13 (2) r/w 13 (1) (c) and (d) of PC Act, 1988 read with 120-B IPC. However, due to insufficient evidence, he is acquitted under section 420/468 IPC.”

Lalrinchhana has fixed the date for the sentence hearing for Tuesday and the convicted person was sent to jail with the bail bond, if any, being cancelled.

Roy, a retired Telecommunication Department official, was booked by the CBI for giving undue favour to K. Sena (L), proprietor of M/s Southern Repairing Works in Aizawl, by awarding him the work of laying overhead cables in Aizawl town during 1995–97 in violation of all relevant rules and regulations at exorbitant rates much higher than the departmental approved rates, thereby causing financial loss to the Telecommunication Department to the tune of Rs. 8,56,112/-.

Criminal charges against K. Sena and another co-accused were withdrawn because they were dead, while another accused Swapan Kumar Bose was exonerated of all accusations due to a lack of evidence.
The court also found Roy guilty of forging quotations of 5 local firms, while holding the posts of Sub Divisional Engineer (Planning) and SDO (T) from December 1993 till May, 1996 under Telecommunication Department in Aizawl.
