The Mizoram health department has expressed concern over as many as 5 COVID-19 deaths in the first 15 days of this month.

Mizoram’s Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) officials informed that the first Covid-19 related death was reported this year in the state when a 63-year old woman, having comorbidities lost her life in Aizawl on May 1. This was the first Covid-19 related death after October 29, 2022.

Following this, four more people succumbed to the disease after May 1, raising the total Covid-19 casualties in the state to 731 since 2020.

It was informed by officials of the Mizoram health department stating that genome sequencing on samples of the infected individuals during April revealed the prevalence of XBB.1.16.1,XBB.1.16 and XBB.1.9.1 of Omicron variants.

The officials said that Omicron XBB.1.16.1 and XBB.1.16 variants are relatively new variants and aged and young are susceptible to these variants.
