Mizoram Health and Family Welfare’s Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has warned the people about consumption of Rohu fish imported from outside the state, according to an official statement issued on Friday.

State FDA officials said they have received a plethora of complaints from the general public that Rohu fish smelled of kerosene oil. The FDA has launched an inquiry into the complaints.

A prohibitory order had been clamped on sale of Rohu fish, while several samples have been taken for further tests.

“As the existing department food testing laboratory is yet to be improved, several samples have been sent to the Central Food Laboratory in Kolkata,” one FDA official said.

The official said that fish sellers were instructed not to import more rohu fish from outside the state and those who are having stocks without the knowledge of the FDA officials are also asked not to sell the fish to the customers.

It is required to launch further investigation into how the rohu fish smell kerosene and the FDAs of the states from where the fish were imported also have been notified and apprised, the official said.

“Fishes smelling of kerosene will not be hygienic for human consumption,” the official said, appealing to the public not to buy or eat such fish.
