A Special Court (under the Prevention of Corruption Act) in Aizawl, Mizoram today sentenced two former state Govt officers to 4 and 5 years in prison for misappropriation of funds and taking a bribe while in service.

Rongura, former Superintendent of Excise and Narcotics, Serchhip district has been sent to jail for 5 years and slapped a fine of Rs 180 lakh and former Assistant Accounts Officer of Serchhip Treasury, Suakngura has been sent to 4 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3 lakh slapped on him in a graft case under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Rongura was convicted on Friday (March 17) for misappropriation of money to the tune of over Rs. 1.73 crores while Suakngura was convicted on the same day for taking a bribe of Rs. 41,000 and helping the former to swindle almost Rs. 2 crores.

The two convicted persons were in jail since Friday evening and were produced before the special court for sentence hearing today. They were later sent back to the Central Jail at Tanhril in the western outskirts of Aizawl.

Special Judge H.T.C. Lalrinchhana, while pronouncing Rongura’s conviction order on Friday, said that Rongura, by abusing his official position as Superintendent of Excise and Narcotics, Serchhip District, who was also Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO), committed criminal misconduct in his salary bill amounting to Rs. 1,73,48,365 by claiming and drawing excess amounts under a criminal conspiracy with Suakngura, who was Assistant Accounts Officer in the office of the Treasury Officer, Serchhip District.

The judge also said that in November 2016, Suakngura received Rs. 41,000 from the office or under the aegis of Rongura, which was credited to Suakngura’s personal bank account as bribe money as part of the criminal conspiracy with Rongura.
