The results of the by-polls for Rengkashya constituency in Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) are out. Congress candidate Doymoy Daveng Chakma won the Rengkashya constituency. The Congress won five seats in the polls.

Polling in the Rengkashya seat was countermanded after the death of BJP candidate Amit Kumar Chakma in a pre-poll violence on May 4.

The polling for Rengkashya seat was held on Wednesday, and counting of votes was undertaken on Friday, where Congress candidate Doymoy Daveng Chakma scored 713 votes, his nearest rival Prema Ranjan Chakma of the Mizo National Front (MNF) secured 572 votes, and the BJP’s Sukrity Chakma managed to get 26 votes.

MNF’s Prema Ranjan Chakma is the main accused in the murder of Amit Kumar Chakma and was arrested by police on May 5, but was released on bail on Tuesday.

In another political development, two newly elected Congress Members of District Council (MDCs) – Supan Chakma and Ananta Bikash – joined the Mizo National Front (MNF) legislature party a few days after three BJP MDCs joined the MNF. This has taken the strength of MNF in the CADC to 15, way above the majority mark of 11 in the 24 member house where 20 are elected and 4 members are nominated.

The leader of the MNF legislature party, Rashik Mohan Chakma, had on May 12 met governor, Hari Babu Kambhampati and staked his claim to form the next government in the CADC.
The two Congress MDCs joined the MNF camp on May 13.
