The Bharatiya Janata Party appointed Rikman Momin as the new state president of Meghalaya on Monday after the term of incumbent state president Ernest Mawrie ended.

The appointment order was issued today by BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda, and Rikman Momin will take the charge with immediate effect.

Reacting to the state president post being given to a representative from Garo Hills, BJP MLA AL Hek said, “BJP is a national party. He is the president of Meghalaya. It is not necessary that it will be from only Khasi hills or only Garo or East Jaintia hills, anybody can be a president from any part of Meghalaya.

He added that Rikman Momin is a very senior party worker and expressed hope that he will contribute a lot to strengthening the party.

Responding to a query on Ernest Mawrie saying that his tenure will not end before 2024, AL Hek said that Mawries’ tenure had ended quite some time ago.
