Meghalaya’s War on Drugs: Narcotics worth Rs 5.91 crore seized so far this month

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has appreciated the efforts made by the Meghalaya Police led by DGP LR Bishnoi in wiping out the menace of drugs

The Conrad Sangma government in Meghalaya is on a war footing to wipe out the drugs menace by zeroing down on the sources and close it down once and for all.

It was a breakthrough for the Meghalaya Police after narcotics worth a whopping Rs 3.75 crore was recovered in a single day. Late Saturday night acting on specific intelligence inputs the East Khasi Hills District Police apprehended a drugs trafficker and recovered heroin worth Rs 1.75 crore.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma appreciated the efforts made by the police with DGP LR Bishnoi being the driving force. According to Sangma the government’s war on drugs has been successful where the police had played the most important role.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister said, “Kudos to @EKH_Police for its successful operation yesterday night that led to arrest of a drug trafficker and recovery of Heroin worth ₹1.75 Crore, the second such recovery on the same day! The unwavering commitment of @meghalayapolice under @lrbishnoiips to dismantle the drugs networks started showing results.These consistent successes exemplify the synergy between law enforcement and the community. let us renew our pledge to combat the drug menace jointly for a #DrugsFreeMeghalaya and work hard to realise this vision.”

In his reply to the Chief Minister’s message, Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi said, “Grateful to HCM
@SangmaConrad sir for your consistent encouragement and unflinching support. We @MeghalayaPolice remain committed towards your vision of #DrugFreeMeghalaya and will leave no stone unturned to achieve this.”

On the same day, it was another breakthrough for the East Khasi Hills district police as it could apprehend a dreaded drugs smuggler Mawryngkneng and recover heroin worth Rs 2 crore. The Meghalaya Chief Minister in a post on social media affirmed his government’s committement to successfully fight a war against drugs.

In the post, the Meghalaya Chief Minister stated, “Kudos to @EKHPolice for seizing heroin worth about ₹2 crores from a notorious interstate drug trafficker at Mawryngkneng today. Amid our efforts to showcase Meghalaya’s tourism-friendly image through events like #CherryBlossomFestival, these traffickers intend to sully our state’s reputation.
Appreciate the rapid response of our dedicated police under @lrbishnoiips.
Our government stands committed against drug trafficking and to fortify the resilience of state and this success exemplifies our unwavering resolve.Together, we forge a prosperous and #DrugsFreeMeghalaya.”

On November 2, a notorious trafficker was arrested at Ladrymbai PS and 2.77Kg of Yaba tablets worth ₹1 crore were seized from him.

On November 3, the West Garo Hills police arrested a drugs peddler and seized heroin worth Rs 10 lakh.

On November 4, a drug peddler was caught by vigilant citizens in Shillong’s Laitumkhrah area. Heroin worth 8 lakh was recovered.

On November 8, the East Khasi Hills Police apprehended a woman drugs peddler after she was captured in a video while distributing drugs to youths in Shillong. Heroin worth Rs 80 lakh was seized from her house is Sweeper Line.

On November 15, the East Jaintia Hills district police apprehended 2 drugs peddlers and seized heroin worth Rs 18 lakh.

From the above data it can be said that narcotics worth Rs 5.91 crore has been seized so far this month till November 18.
