One person was killed, while another was injured after a house collapsed due to a landslide triggered by torrential rain in Koinabui, West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya today.

The deceased has been identified as 57-year-old Santa N. Marak.

As per inputs, the landslide occurred when Santa N. Marak and her daughter Moralistic Marak were in their kitchen. Santa N. Marak died on the spot while her daughter sustained severe injuries.

Moralistic is currently receiving treatment at a Community Health Centre in Dalu.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is actively engaged in rescue operations in the affected areas.

The heavy rainfall has also led to widespread flash floods in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills region. Among the worst affected is South Garo Hills where incessant rains have led to washing away of wooden bridges and damaged roads at several locations.

The Bakgla bridge has been washed away by the flood waters, severely affecting road connectivity in the area.

Meanwhile, heavy downpours has also led to flash floods in the West Garo Hills headquarters Tura.

Reports of minor landslides have also come in from some areas.

Meghalaya Power Minister AT Mondal is scheduled to survey some of the affected areas soon.

The West Garo Hills district administration has requested assistance from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to aid in recovery efforts in Dalu.

Additionally, traffic has been disrupted in the Jaintia Hills district due to a heavy vehicle breakdown at Mookyndur.

Authorities advised light vehicles travelling from Jowai to Shillong or Guwahati to take an alternate route via Nartiang-Bamkamar road.
