Meghalaya: HYC stages protest over ILP, 8th Schedule issues

First Published: 19th January, 2024 16:22 IST

The protest came amidst Amit Shah’s visit to the state to take part in the Plenary session of the North East Council.

The Hynniewtrep Youth Council led by its president Roykupar Synrem staged a protest in Shillong today demanding the implementation of ILP in the state and inclusion of Khasi dialect in the 8th Schedule.

Carrying placards and shouting slogans, the HYC members and supporters staged a protest near Civil Point asking the centre to implement the ILP in the state.
The protest came amidst Amit Shah’s visit to the state to take part in the Plenary session of the North East Council.

One of the protestors, speaking to the media, said, “After coming to know that the Union Home Minister is visiting Shillong we have organized this protest programme to raise the important issues that are still pending with the Union Government. One is the ILP and the other is inclusion of Khasi dialect in the 8th Schedule.”
“Whenever we speak to the Chief Minister or Deputy Chief Minister they always say that the central government is examining the matter. When Manipur can be given an ILP in a matter of months why can’t Meghalaya get the same treatment,” he added.
It may be mentioned that earlier Meghalaya Cabinet Minister AL Hek and BJP Leader also stated that the state unit would raise the issue of implementation of ILP and inclusion of Khasi and Garo dialects in the 8th schedule to Home Minister Shah.
