Meghalaya has blamed Assam for poor air quality in Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi district. Byrnihat has been listed as the most polluted area in the country by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Thursday said that the pollution in Byrnihat could very well be because of the factories and industries on Assam side (close to Byrnihat) as the Meghalaya side hardly has any factory.

“The left side while going to Guwahati is Meghalaya and the right side is Assam. There are a number of factories all along the right side whereas from our left side we have only a designated industrial estate and we do also have factories but it is well monitored by the Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), Shillong,” said DCM Tynsong.

He said that he has already directed the Chief Secretary of the state to take up the matter with Assam counterpart to find out ways and means to monitor factories.

The air quality index (AQI) report by CPCB tagged Byrnihat as the most polluted area in the country with an air quality index of 302 at 4 PM on October 25, 2023 and was labelled as ‘very poor’.

Meghalaya’s capital city and a popular tourist destination, Shillong’s air quality was tagged as Good with air quality index value of 15.

The air quality index of nearby Guwahati in Assam was Satisfactory with an AQI value of 63.
