Air connectivity in Meghalaya is expected to experience a big boost as the state government has initiated the first step of a mega expansion plan.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today met Civil Aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and presented before him a set of proposals for the purpose of further enhancing the air connectivity in the state.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Sangma put forward a proposal to set up heliports in Shillong and Tura. Besides, the Meghalaya Chief Minister also urged the Union Civil Aviation minister to create an international airport and operationalize the Baljek Airport.

Taking to Twitter, Sangma said,”These proposals are aimed at boosting our State’s tourism potential & economic growth through air connectivity.”

Worth mentioning the Baljek airport, which emerged as the lone source of connectivity to the Garo Hills region was inaugurated in 2008 by then President Pratibha Patil. It was initially designed to handle smaller aircrafts like the Dornier 228.

Significantly, since then the airport has been non-operational although the reasons for this are yet unclear.

However, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, last month had announced that the non-functional Baljek Airport would be made operational within this year.

But as of now it is yet to materialize.
