The Minister said that construction of over 200 new lower primary school buildings have already been completed, while over 100 will be completed within the financial year.
“The government is committed and has already earmarked a budget to construct new school buildings as well as renovating and repairing dilapidated school buildings within the next two years. In the last 5 years, we have seen lots of progress and about 200 plus new school buildings have already been completed and within this financial year, we will be having some more 100 plus new buildings,” said the Minister.
Minister Sangma said that there are around 2,000 government lower primary schools that have been divided into several categories based on their requirements. Certain ones require a total makeover, while others just require minor repairs and the demolition of existing structures.
“In the last 50 years, the infrastructure of school buildings was not taken on priority. Only after the Conrad Sangma-led government assumed office has taken on a mission mode under mission education in the last 5-6 years and built more than 300 school buildings.”
