Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma once again highlighted the fact that complications have cropped up in solving the border issue with Assam in 6 locations. The Meghalaya Chief Minister attributed the complications to the Mukroh incident, where 5 civilians lost their lives in firing by Assam Police personnel in West Jaintia Hills district.
Conrad Sangma said, “Our efforts will be to go to the remaining 6 areas of differences. But, different complications have cropped up and situation has become more complicated due to the (Mukroh) incident last week. Besides, the status of the remaining areas of differences is also complicated.”
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma affirmed that his government is seriously working on the issue. Sangma added that his government’s efforts are centred on finding a long term solution to the border issue so that there are no untoward incidents in the future.
According to the Meghalaya Chief Minister this will people of both the states in the border areas to live in peace and harmony.
The Meghalaya Chief Minister’s statement assumes a lot of significance since many had signified the Mukroh firing incident as an outcome of the border issue. However, the Assam government had ruled out any such angle and maintained that Assam Police personnel had opened fire only to protect themselves from attack by locals in Mukroh over the seizure of illegal timber laden truck.
