Christmas fever grips Meghalaya, preparations underway for grand celebration

Reported by Purbasha Bhattacharjee

It’s that time of the year in Meghalaya when bright lights light up the streets and though the weather is cold, the wind is chilly, hearts are very much warm . It is Christmas time. Decorations are ready for sale and people are gearing up for the festivities.
Well lit Christmas Stars can be seen hanging in the shops and celebrations are set to begin as people flood the popular markets of Khyndailad or Police Bazar and Iewduh shopping for the festival.
Christmas decorations of all kinds have been flying off the shelves of stores across Shillong markets. Decoration items are magnificently displayed in shops.
State Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh informed that the department is sponsoring the decorations in Shillong and in Tura. Lyngdoh said that in the previous years, private parties were involved but this year it is the state government who has come forward in a big way to showcase how Shillong celebrates Christmas.

People from outside the state flock into the state and hotel rooms are sold out months in advance. Natural beauty along with festive decorations adds a special charm to the place which is rarely seen anywhere else. Every house in the state is carefully decorated and people take a break from their usual life making merry with their loved ones. The feeling of warmth of the season, the songs of peace and unity in everyone’s lips is worth experiencing.
