Following the violent attack by armed miscreants on devotees at Mahadev Khola Dham in Meghalaya today, State Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, who is also the government’s spokesperson, said that the government would take all necessary measures to ensure that any situation involving law and order is contained.
Talking to Northeast Live, Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “Meghalaya government will go all out to ensure that it contains any law and order situation that arises. We have a very efficient police department, a very efficient system at hand. Meghalaya is one of the few states where communities also come forward to assist the government and the police department in the containment of untoward incidents since we have Dorbar Shnong (traditional village institution), village defence party and various state alone positives which can be put into action to ensure that law and order is contained.”
“We are going to work hard to restore any sense of fear that the public feel in general. I hope we will be able to combat at least some of the violence that are constantly bringing insecurity in our community,” the Minister added.
It may be mentioned here that, since today is the 3rd Monday of the holy month of Shravan, a huge number of Hindu devotees from the state and outside the state gathered outside the Mahadev Khola Dham to pour holy water on the Shiva linga.
At around, 12. 30 pm, a group of 5-6 armed miscreants entered the dham and created a ruckus.
They first entered a shop near the gate of the dham and assaulted the owner (widow) and her only son and took away Rs 20,000 from their shop. They then proceeded inside and then they attacked devotees before running away.
Speaking to Northeast Live, a victim devotee said that despite the shop owner pleading with them to stop, the miscreants with knives continued to assault them.
