The “Huro”, as the Garos call it, has been conserved for generations as it is considered as a Sacred Animal

In a recent development, member of Lok Sabha from Meghalaya, Saleng A. Sangma urged Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav to intervene in the proposal of Meghalaya Government to relocate Hoolock Gibbons from Sonja Wildlife Rescue Centre in Tura to Meghalaya State Zoo in Umtrew.

The MP, in his letter mentioned that Gibbons have particular habitat requirements, including particular types of forest cover and food sources. He also stated that hoolock gibbons are one of the endangered species of the world and local authorities are actively engaged in taking all measures to build an environment for their survival in the present habitat. He further mentioned that relocation of hoolock gibbons can compromise their immunity, making them more susceptible to diseases and also exposing them to pathogens in the new environment, to which they have no immunity.

Seeking immediate intervention of the Union Environment Minister, the MP further requested that efforts and appropriate steps as per the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) standards should be taken to build a conducive environment for their survival and sustainability in the Garo Hills itself.

Taking to X, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma said, “The Government has NOT decided to shift the Hoolock gibbons (Huro) from their current location. It is incorrect that we are shifting them, though Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has proposed it. Press release only clarifies that current location is NOT as per CZA specification.”
