Mega makeover in the offing for Kamakhya Temple corridor. Take a look

The project includes the renovation of the entrance, covered walkways from the entrance to the temple, renovated structures, and parks among others

A mega makeover awaits the way leading to the much popular and much revered Kamakhya temple in Guwahati. It is not just the way but the entire area around the temple will get a facelift.

A covered walkway, parks, 100,000 square feet of open space spanning across three levels, a holding capacity of between 8,000 and 10,000 pilgrims are among the grand expansion, renovation and beautification plan under the mega Kamakhya Corridor project.

The project that draws inspiration from the Kashi-Vishwanath Corridor was announced by Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog in her Budget Speech last month. The public works department (PWD) is preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for the project. The state government is yet to announce the cost of the project.

The access corridor’s average width would increase from the current 8 to 10 feet to approximately 27 to 30 feet. An additional 100,000 square feet of open space, spanning across three levels, will be added to the current 3,000 square feet of space surrounding the temple.

Six significant temples in the complex, which are currently hidden from the general public’s glance, would reportedly be brought back to their original glory, as per reports.

Moreover, a holding capacity of between 8,000 and 10,000 pilgrims will also be created as part of the project to lessen the pressure during the Ambubachi Mela and other significant festivals.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently took to Twitter and shared a glimpse of how the Maa Kamakhya Corridor would look like once the renovation is done.

“Sharing a glimpse of how the renovated Maa Kamakhya Corridor will look like in the near future,”CM Sarma tweeted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi retweeted the video shared by Assam Chief Minister Sarma and wrote, “I am sure Maa Kamakhya corridor will be a landmark initiative. Kashi Vishwanath Dham and Shree Mahakal Mahalok have been transformative as far as the spiritual experience is concerned. Equally important is the fact that tourism is enhanced and the local economy gets a boost.”

While many liked the new look of the Kamakhya corridor, a few people said it is looking “too modern”.

The Kamakhya Temple is located at Nilachal hills in Guwahati. It is one of the oldest and most revered centres of Tantric practices, dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya. The temple is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites.

As per religious beliefs, Devi Sati’s genitals and womb fell here (where the current temple is located) when her husband, Lord Shiva performed taandav.

According to the legends, the location of the womb and the fallen genitalia was unknown until Kamdev, the God of Love, went in quest of them as part of his penance. After finding the parts, Kamdev was freed from the Brahma-given curse Thus the place came to be known as Kamakhya.

The Ambubachi Mela celebration commemorates the Goddess’ monthly period every year. The temple is shut down for three days during the mela as a time for the Goddess to rest. At this time, a number of pilgrims, yoginis, and yogis congregate and fill the area with music and festivities. The temple reopens for worship on the fourth day.
