Visited Manipur to share people’s pain: Cong leader Rahul Gandhi

During his 2-day visit Rahul Gandhi spoke to different stakeholders including Manipur Governor, leaders of CSOs as well as affected people

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday today batted for peace in trouble torn Manipur and appealed every section of the society to come forward and overcome this turmoil. Gandhi said that acts of violence will never resolve any issues.

On the concluding day of his 2-day Manipur visit, the Congress leader visited relief camps in Moirang where he interacted with the inmates and also took stock of their condition.

Soon after that Rahul Gandhi proceeded to the Raj Bhawan and met Governor Anusuiya Uikey. In the meeting the leader discussed with the Governor ways to bring peace to the state at the earliest.

“I came here because I wanted to share the pain of the people of Manipur. It is a horrible tragedy that has taken place. It is extremely sad and painful for all the people of Manipur and all the people of India as well,” the Congress leader said speaking to media.

Rahul Gandhi made a clarion call to everyone for making the best efforts to restore peace. He said, “I want to appeal everybody in Manipur, that we need peace, peace is the most important. I would appeal to everybody in Manipur that we need peace. My strong appeal to everyone is that violence will not get anything for anybody.”

“Peace is the way forward and everybody should now talk about peace and start moving towards it. I am here and will help in any way I can to bring peace to this state,” Gandhi further said.

The Congress leader after visiting various relief camps in Moirang highlighted that the basic amenities in the facilities must be improved.

He said, “Food needs to be improved. Medicines need to be supplied. Such complaints have come from the camps.”

Rahul Gandhi also met representatives of different Civil Society Organisations in Imphal and held deliberations on the prevailing situation and ways to mitigate it.

Rahul Gandhi had landed in Imphal yesterday and headed straight to Churachandpur to meet violence affected people living in relief camps and also interact with Civil Society Organisations, Meira Paibis (Imas or Mothers of Manipur) and community leaders.

But the convoy of Gandhi was stopped at Bishnupur which is about 20 kms from Churachandpur owing to security reasons.

Following this, the Congress leader left for Churachandpur in a chopper and visited a relief camp. Gandhi also shared lunch with the children of the relief camp and also spoke to members of Civil Society Organisations.
