The SP maintained that the government will act harshly against those involved in the poppy trade and expressed hope that poppy cultivation will be further reduced starting next season

The Manipur government, despite various challenges, continues the drive for mass destruction of illicit poppy cultivated in various parts of the state.

On Thursday, teams of Kangpokpi district police, forest personnel, and Manipur Police Training College trainees carried out mass poppy destruction in at least three different locations spanning over 25 acres in T Gojang and Pangjang villages under Saikul Police Station in Manipur.

Kangpokpi district SP Th. Vikramjit told Northeast Live that the district police have registered more than 20 cases and have arrested five people linked to illegal poppy cultivation. He informed that investigations into all of the cases are going on.

He said that the real kingpins will be identified through investigation, but it is too early to comment on anything since the investigation is still in progress.

The SP maintained that the government will act harshly against those involved in the poppy trade and expressed hope that poppy cultivation will be further reduced starting next season.

He added that the drive will continue throughout February and that he is hopeful that poppy cultivation will decrease next year.

This season, poppy cultivation on over 700 acres of land was destroyed in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.

“As part of the war against drugs, we have been destroying illegal poppy plantations in different parts of Kangpokpi. Till now, we have destroyed more than 700 acres of illegal poppy plantations.” SP Vikramjit said.
