Manipur violence: Court should not be used to escalate tension, says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court today issued a cautionary message as it heard cases pertaining to Manipur violence and urged to refrain from utilising the court as a platform that could possibly escalate the volatile situation in Manipur. The Supreme Court said this while remarking on the Manipur violence PILs

Colin Gonsalves, appearing for the Manipur Tribals Forum, made repeated attempts to claim that the violence against the Kuki community was state-sponsored. However, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha intervened and said that the Supreme Court should not be used as a platform for further escalation of violence in the state. The court also urged Gonsalves to offer constructive suggestions instead.

The apex court also directed both the Union and state governments to consider a plea made by the Manipur High Court Bar Association, which requested that a 10-kilometer stretch of a crucial highway, serving as the only lifeline for essential supplies, should be kept clear for transporting essential commodities. The Supreme Court asked the Solicitor General to look into the issue.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Manipur government in the Supreme Court today said that an affidavit has been filed regarding the present situation in Manipur and measures taken to curb the violence in the State.
The apex court said that the last time it was brought to the Court’s attention, that a large number of weapons were taken from Police Stations. Taking strong exception to this, the SC has asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta about the extent of action taken in this regard.

The Supreme Court bench further directed Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi to file a status report with regard to action taken regarding a large number of weapons which were taken from police stations.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear tomorrow, the Manipur government’s plea against the High Court order allowing the restoration of internet in the State.
