The viral video is reported to be of May 4 or the early days of the ethnic strife in Manipur that started on May 3.

Condemnation has poured in from different quarters regarding a viral video showing two women being stripped and dragged by a mob in Manipur.

Starting from Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar to Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani have taken to social media to condemn the act in their strongest terms.

In fact what can be termed as the first big Bollywood reaction on the mindless violence in Manipur, Akshay Kumar expressed his unhappiness over the incident.

Taking to Twitter, Akshay Kumar said, “Shaken, disgusted to see the video of violence against women in Manipur. I hope the culprits get such a harsh punishment that no one ever thinks of doing a horrifying thing like this again.”

Union minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani also shared her thoughts on the incident and informed that she has already spoken to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh over the matter.
The Union minister tweeted and said,”The horrific video of sexual assault of 2 women emanating from Manipur is condemnable and downright inhuman. Spoke to CM @NBirenSingh ji who has informed me that investigation is currently underway & assured that no effort will be spared to bring perpetrators to justice.”

BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland S. Phangnon Konyak also expressed her resentment over the videos that have gone viral. She tweeted,”No crime will be condoned. Those guilty will be booked.”

Advisor to Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Abu Metha too has condemned the incident in strongest terms. Taking to Twitter he said,”Oh Manipur … so so painful .. there are no words … the heart bleeds …. Prayers …”

Soon after the video of the incident went viral, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also took to Twitter and stated,”PM’s silence and inaction has led Manipur into anarchy. INDIA will not stay silent while the idea of India is being attacked in Manipur. We stand with the people of Manipur. Peace is the only way forward.”

The Manipur Police swung into action after the video went viral and issued a statement saying that,”All out effort to arrest culprits as regard to the viral video of 02 (two) women paraded naked was registered at Nongpok Sekmai PS (Thoubal District) against unknown armed miscreants and the investigation has been started. The State Police is making all-out effort to arrest the culprits at the earliest.”

Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal said, “I am unable to sleep after watching the video which has come from Manipur. The incident happened 2.5 months ago but no arrest has been made so far. I am ashamed that no one has been arrested. Central govt is silent, PM has not made a single statement. I am writing today to the Manipur CM and PM Modi to end the violence in Manipur and take action against the accused and police officials.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is also shocked over the matter. He tweeted,”Absolutely heartbroken and appalled by the agonising violence unleashed on women in #Manipur. Where is our collective conscience? The hate and venom are uprooting the very soul of humanity. We must stand united against such atrocities and work towards fostering a society of empathy and respect. The Union Government should take all necessary steps to restore peace in Manipur.”

Manipur BJP MLA from Sagolband, Rajkumar Imo Singh too has condemned the incident. Taking to Twitter he mentioned,”Just saw the video clip of two women being paraded naked, and sexually abused, very disturbing and feel disgusted seeing it. Upon enquiring, I was informed that the incident happened on 4th May, the complaint was made on 18th May and FIR was registered in June, but no accused have been arrested till now. I want Manipur Police to identify these people in the video, arrest them immediately and give capital punishment so that no person dares to repeat this heinous crime again. Let us not spare any of these people involved.”

Responding to the Tweet by Manipur Police, TIPRA Motha Chief Pradyot Kishor Debbarma said,”No one trusts you anymore ! And I don’t blame them for not trusting you ! The faces are there and clear ! This act could not have happened without police looking the other way.”

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge before the starting of the Monsoon Session of the Parliament said, “Today we are raising the issue (of Manipur in Parliament). I have also given notice. We will see whether our Chairman (Rajya Sabha) will allow us to raise it or not. PM is silent on this. You have time to call 38 parties (for the NDA meeting) but you (PM) don’t have time to go there.”

Highly perturbed by the incident, Assam Congress Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi said,”Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi says, “The visuals from Manipur that we saw yesterday have left us shocked. I think, first of all, the PM should come to the House and make a statement on Manipur and appeal for peace. PM Modi should apologise to the people of Manipur today for his failures and that of his government…Perhaps then will the people of the state have some relief.”
