Manipur Journalists’ Pen-Down Strike Tomorrow, To Suspend All Print and Electronic Activities

Journalists’ bodies have decided not to print newspapers and TV channels will go off air in protest of attacks on the media in Manipur

The All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) and the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) will stage a pen-down strike tomorrow, newspapers will not be printed and TV channels will go off air, to protest the incident of arson in Kangpokpi district that destroyed news prints worth lakhs of rupees belonging to a leading local daily last night.

The AMWJU and EGM held a meeting today at the Manipur Press Club and decided to stage the pen-down strike.

Both print and electronic media operations will remain suspended tomorrow in response to the torching of news prints worth around Rs 50 lakhs.

The destroyed news prints belonged to The Sangai Express, a popular English daily of Manipur. The news prints were being transported from Guwahati to Imphal when it came under attack.

It may be mentioned here that armed men attacked the freight trucks and set fire to the press materials.
