Manipur Govt to deploy more forces, security for farmers; CM chairs key meet

The decisions were taken in a meeting of the security forces chaired by Chief Minister N Biren Singh

The N Biren Singh-led Manipur government has stepped up its efforts to bring peace in the violence affected state that has been burning for over two months now. The N Biren Singh government has decided to destroy all bunkers, give security to farmers and deploy more forces in the 5 worst violence affected districts of the state – Kanpokpi, Churachandpur, Imphal West and East and Bishnupur.

These decisions were taken after a series of meetings Chief Minister Singh chaired back to back with stakeholders including a meeting of the Combined Headquarters (CHQ) on Monday to discuss ways to defuse the situation and ensure return of normalcy in the state.

The meeting was attended by senior officers of the state government, Indian Army and the Para Military forces.

Briefing newspersons, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said, “In the meeting we have decided bunkers built has to be destroyed and paramilitary forces and police forces will be deployed in the vulnerable areas.
For agricultural purposes government has decided to give more security personnel in 5 districts. It includes Kangpokpi adjoining area, Churachandpur adjoining area, for Churachandpur also we will provide security for those who want to do farming. Similarly we are also providing in Imphal East and Imphal West including Kakching. Around 2000 police personnel will be given in addition to the previous deployed personnel.
Seeing the importance the state government has decided to open the schools from Wednesday July 5 Class 1-8.”

After this, the Manipur Chief Minister chaired another meeting with his cabinet ministers and MLAs of the ruling coalition.

The prevailing situation and what can be done to control the violence topped the agenda of the meeting. During the discussions, N Biren Singh appreciated the role played by the ministers and MLAs in restoring normalcy.


N Biren Singh tweeted, “Held a meeting with Ministers and MLAs of the ruling coalition to discuss the way forward in controlling the violence and bring peace in Manipur.
I’m thankful to all my MLAs colleagues for their cooperation in dealing with the situation. They have also been working relentlessly to provide all forms of assistance for the displaced people in relief camps.”

The Manipur Chief Minister chaired the series of meetings after fresh incidents of violence was reported from Kangpokpi district yesterday. On July 2, tension had escalated after the death of 3 persons in a firing incident at Khoijumantabi in Bishnupur district. Another death was also reported from Churachandpur district.
