Notably, this will be Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s second meeting with Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya in less than 24 hours amid escalating violence that killed at least 9 people were killed in fresh firing in Jiribam district on Saturday evening.
According to sources, the team led by the Chief Minister will hand over a set of resolutions adopted by the cabinet to the Governor, to bring peace in the state.
Sources said that the N Biren Singh Cabinet is of the opinion that the enforcement of Article 355 of the Indian Constitution in Manipur is needed, citing the increasing difficulty in handling the state’s law and order situation due to differing approaches.
Another resolution of the Cabinet is that either the central government will handle the situation or the state government.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh held two Cabinet meetings from Friday to Saturday, in view of the recent spate of violence in the state which has further escalated since September 1 with miscreants using drones and rockets killing at least 12 people so far.
After the meetings, CM N Biren Singh met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at the Raj Bhavan last night, wherein threadbare discussions on the prevailing law and order situation was held.
The Chief Minister briefed the Governor about the steps taken to ensure peace and tranquillity in the state.
Amid the escalating situation in the state, the Assam Rifles has deployed a few anti-drone systems in the state.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has also handed over one anti-drone system to security forces in the ethnic strife-torn state, the Manipur Police said in a statement.
Stating that some more “anti-drone guns” are being brought to Manipur by CRPF shortly, the state police added the anti-drone systems were being installed to repel rogue drones that have been used to drop explosives in civilian areas.
As per sources, an anti-drone system has also been installed at the Raj Bhavan and will be installed at the Chief Minister’s office and the Manipur Assembly.
Since the beginning of this month drones were used to drop explosives in at least three different places, in which one woman died and over 12 others were injured.
Meanwhile, the Manipur director general of police (DGP), on the Centre’s instructions, has already formed a committee of five top officials -Army’s 57 Mountain divisions lieutenant general, Manipur ADGP, Assam Rifles major general, and inspector generals from CRPF and Border Security Force (BSF) on September 2 amid use of drones in recent militant attacks.
The committee will have to critically study and examine the drones used by militants, collect evidence, specification of the drones used and suggest ways to effectively counter such drones, reports further stated.
