Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has highlighted the growing challenge of illegal immigration as a significant threat to the state, demanding urgent attention and action.
In a recent post on X, CM N Biren Singh said that the influx of illegal immigrants in recent years has become a complex issue with far-reaching implications for Manipur’s demographic stability.
“Illegal immigration into Manipur is a serious issue that demands immediate attention. A review of demographic changes in the last two decades shows significant population growth in one community, linked to a controversial policy by the previous government allowing unchecked immigration from a neighboring country,” CM N Biren Singh wrote on X.
He pointed to a troubling trend observed over the past two decades and said, “If this trend continues, it could threaten the future of our indigenous communities, potentially making our own people a minority in their own land. It is crucial for every one of us to address this issue, enforce stricter immigration policies, and protect the demographic balance and cultural heritage of our state.”
CM N Biren Singh said that due to the Myanmar coup and civil war, a significant number of immigrants from Myanmar are entering Indian border villages.
He said that to address national security concerns the Manipur government established a cabinet sub-committee led by Minister Letpao Hapkip. According to the initial findings of the first phase of the identification exercises as of March 24 last year, 1147 Myanmar immigrants were found at Tengnupal (13 villages), 881 at Chandel (3 villages), 154 at Churachandpur (1 village), five, 5 at Kamjong (24 villages).
It was observed that illegal immigrants established their own villages. The new villages were strongly opposed to the advised proposal of shelter homes to be built by the government for them. The total immigrant population in Manipur must be significantly higher, considering the number of immigrants revealed in just the first phase of the identification exercise, said the CM.
“Manipur has grappled with the pressing issue that threatens, its social fabric and economic stability. It was a significant challenge to the state’s governance, security and identity. The infiltration and influx have posed challenges to social cohesion and harmony potentially fuelling, resentment and conflict among different communities. Strengthening border security enhances surveillance and capacity-building measures are essential to prevent unauthorised entry and curb illicit activities has been started. As the issue continues to garner attention and concern, it is imperative to examine the root causes, consequences and potential solutions,” the Chief Minister added.
