All the 10 Kuki MLAs did not attend the Assembly Session that was convened for the first time since violence broke in May

Manipur Assembly that met today for the first time since violence broke out in the state four months ago, concluded within 20 minutes of the session.

The Assembly proceedings started at 11AM by observing two minutes’ silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the violence and minutes later Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh adjourned the session sine die.

The opposition Congress created a ruckus in the Assembly demanding to be allowed to speak and the Session be extended by 5 more days.

Speaker Satyabrata Singh refused to entertain the Congress’s demand and adjourned the House with a resolution for peace.

All the 10 Kuki MLAs did not attend the Assembly. Six of the MLAs – Tengnoupal MLA Letpao Haokip, Kangpokpi MLA Nemcha Kipgen, Saikul MLA Kimneo Hangsing, Churachandpur MLA LM Khaute, Henglep MLA Letzamang Haokip and Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen had applied for leave.

The state government had last month recommended a session by August 21, but later revised it to August 28 on not getting the go ahead from the Raj Bhavan. Last week, the Chief Minister’s Office announced that the Assembly will reconvene from August 29.
