DoNER Minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday briefed MPs from northeastern states about the various schemes and programmes of the central government being run for the development of the region.

The Centre will focus more on improving and upgrading the living conditions of the people of Northeast. A chief nodal officer and nodal officers have been nominated by the Centre to achieve the Modi government’s development goals for the region, Union minister of state for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh said during his interaction with the MPs from the Northeast.

Continuing with the Modi government’s focus on development of the region Union Home minister Amit Shah will chair the plenary session of the North East Council in Guwahati scheduled for August 3 and 4.

Jitendra Singh briefed the MPs of the region about the ongoing schemes and future plans of the Central government for the region. Singh and his ministry officials had already met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam to push for higher budgetary support for the region in the Budget for the 2019-20 fiscal.

During the last term of the Modi government the region had seen a huge infra push – in Assam Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Bogibeel and Dhola-Sadiya bridges, considered critical from security and military point of view, Arunachal’s Hollongi airport was inaugurated and Sikkim got its first airport – Pakyong.

DoNER is the only region-based ministry in the government and in past five years this ministry has given due priority to the development of the region. Singh said the Central government would continue with its developmental schemes for the region in close co-ordination with the elected representatives from the states of the region.
