Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu today conveyed his best wishes to Taekwondo champion Kumari Rupa Bayor ahead of her participation at the Australian Open/Oceania President’s Cup to be held on 7-10 July 2023 at Morayfield Sport & Events Centre in Queensland Australia.
“Kumari Rupa Bayor, an ace taekwondo athlete, is the pride of Arunachal Pradesh and India. She has many achievements in her kitty and many more are in the offing. She made it to the top 25 WT World rankings in April 2023. She has also secured 8th position in Asia ranking and holds India Rank No. 1. Today she made a courtesy call. Had a pleasant meeting with her. Best wishes to her for Australian Open/Oceania President’s Cup to be held on 7-10 July 2023,” tweeted CM Pema Khandu.
Kumari Rupa Bayor who hails from Sippi village in Upper Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, had called on the CM today. She was learning karate at a local martial arts club. Later, her uncle encouraged her to switch to Taekwondo. Her first tournament was at The National School Games in Pune.
Although she lost the tournament, but she acquired the experience and exposure, which helped her to become a stronger player. Her first international tournament was the Kim Un Yong Cup in South Korea. However, she could not win the tournament due to her lack of experience on the international circuit.
In 2022, Rupa Bayor won a bronze medal in the 8th Croatia Open International Taekwondo Championship held in the capital city of Croatia – Zegreb, becoming the first female Indian athlete to win any medal at a G2 event of World Taekwondo (WT).
