Assam CM briefed Singh on the unprecedented 26% increase in power demand due to the growth of productive sectors of the economy.
Amid frequent power cuts across the state and a huge spike in demand for power, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday met the Union Power Minister RK Singh in New Delhi and briefed him about the power deficit in the state.
Assam CM briefed Singh on the unprecedented 26% increase in demand for power due to the growth of productive sectors of the economy.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the chief minister informed, “Had an excellent discussion with Hon’ble Union Power Minister Shri RK Singh ji. I briefed him on the unprecedented 26% increase in power demand due to growth of productive sectors of the economy.”
“He has assured to kindly consider my personal request to allocate at least 300 MW of power to Assam, which will aid in tiding over the current power deficit”, Sarma added.
Earlier this week, Chief Minister Sarma said the state registered a steep increase in peak hour-power demand in 2023.
“From being at 1,800 MW till last year, it touched 2,500 MW this year,” Sarma said. “We have power availability of 1,650 MW from our own sources and tied-up arrangements. A shortage of 100-200 mw can be adjusted by procuring from the open source at Rs 10 per unit,” the CM further said.
However, Sarma said that if the government bought additional power from open source, it would be forced to increase the power tariff by Rs 1.50 per unit.
However, CM Sarma pointed out that from December this year, power production capacity would be increased by 1000 megawatt following which people would be able to avail services at a lower rate.
